I Love Old Movies

I Love Old Movies

By Derek and Sam Weatherdon

A guy and his 17 year old daughter discuss the films and people of Old Hollywood.

Ok, maybe that oversimplifies it a bit. Derek is an educator with a degree in Film Studies, and Sam is an aspiring actress with close to 50 stage credits and an indy film under her belt. They've been watching movies together for a long time, and their shared interest in film history (Sam's been called an "old soul" by many people. and Derek's just old) drives this podcast.

ILOM 58 - The Great Escape

It's November, and that's when we like to take a look at war films. This time around, we look at one of (if not the) greatest prisoner of war film ever, The Great Escape. This is a film that holds a special place in Sam's heart, and is the sort of film we could talk about for hours. Both as a film, and an historical event, this tale is truly one for the ages! Have a listen and hear what we thought!

ILOM 56 - Nosferatu

ILOM 56 - Nosferatu

Obviously, words like "...the most important film in the history of horror cinema" get thrown around all willy-nilly these days...but I ask you, if this film doesn't qualify for such praise, which one possibly could?

We take an affectionate look at one of Sam's favourite films, and Derek's favourite vampire film, as we embrace spooky season with a watch of Nosferatu (1922). Have a listen and let us know what you think!

Also, it's Sam's birthday! Give her a shout out for her 18th!

ILOM 55 - The Alamo (1960)

ILOM 55 - The Alamo (1960)

Ok, so maybe we still have a bit more Davy Crockett to cover. And when that means we get to take a look at a John Wayne film, specifically an historical EPIC, directed by The Duke....well, how can we resist? John Wayne is one of Sam's favourites, so you know she's bringing her A-Level enthusiasm for this one! But is this film the masterpiece that John Wayne intended? Or is it a failed film from a woefully inexperienced director whose reach exceeded his grasp? Have a listen and hear what we thought!

ILOM 54 - Davy Crockett: King of the Wild Frontier

ILOM 54 - Davy Crockett: King of the Wild Frontier

When three hugely popular episodes of Walt Disney's Disneyland TV show were spliced together to create a film for cinematic release, one wonders if anyone thought this would be too much Davy Crockett. Well, as it turns out, in 1955, there was no such thing as Davy Crockett! A mythical character, brought perfectly to life by Fess Parker, Davy was the quintessential post-war, pre-Elvis hero! But how does this film hold up today? And more importantly, do we recommend a watch on this one? Have a listen and hear what we thought!

ILOM 53 - Buck Privates (1941)

Happy September everyone! We welcome the school year back with a new episode, this time looking at something fun! Buck Privates was only the second film Abbott and Costello appeared in, but it was their first true "starring" vehicle for the duo. This movie brings the laughs as well as some incredible music numbers by The Andrews Sisters! This film is a comedy classic...but is its reputation earned? Or is it's reputation better than the on screen results? Have a listen and hear what we thought!

You've probably heard of this film. You've probably heard its great. But is it? ILOM 45 - Dark City (1950)

June Noir continues with our look at a film that features the Hollywood debut of screen legend Charlton Heston....Dark City. This film has a great supporting cast with Jack Webb, Harry Morgan, and one of our favourites here on the show, Don Defore. But it also has Lizabeth Scott, and your mileage may vary on her. A weird revenge tale, with a cast of unlikeable characters, is this a great noir film? Or is it miss that should have been a hit? ILOM 42 - Animal Farm (1954)

We wrap up our month-long look at animated films with the first animated feature produced by the British Film Industry, Animal Farm. Funded in part by the CIA , the anti-totalitarian messages from the George Orwell book at brought vividly, almost gruesomely, to life by the husband-wife animation team of Halas-Batchelor. Intended as propaganda cloaked as entertainment, how does this film stack up as a piece of work on its own merits? We aren't going to try to unpack all of the themes of the source material here, just evaluate the film on it's own merits. Directed by the great Michael Curtiz, and starring screen legends Errol Flynn and Olivia DeHavilland (ably supported by Claude Rains, Basil Rathbone, and Alan Hale), this might just be THE definitive Robin Hood movie. ILOM - Episode 34 - Yellow Sky

How we ever got 34 episodes in without looking at a Gregory Peck film is beyond me, but we make up for it in style, with discuss the incredible 1948 western Yellow Sky.  A film that is beautifully shot, almost thematically a film noir, and driven by a fantastic script, this is the sort of western that could turn you on to the whole genre. We had a lot to say about this one, so sit back and enjoy! This is the last film of all-Western March, and we might have saved the best for last.

ILOM - Episode 32 - The Professionals

We've got a very special request for this episode, our second Western film of our month-long look a the genre! Derek's dad (Sam's Gumpy) asked that we take a look at one of his favourite westerns, and with a cast like this, how could we refuse? Sure, it's got Burt Lancaster, and that's always a touchy thing around here, but it also has Lee Marvin, one of Sam's favourite tough guy actors. So, how does The Professionals stack up, all these years later? Have a listen and hear what we thought!

ILOM - Episode 31 - The Unforgiven

ILOM - Episode 31 - The Unforgiven

We jump with two feet into our month-long look at western movies, beginning with a film that didn't' quite meet it's goals of being an epic classic, 1960's The Unforgiven! There's a lot to unpack with this one, including a troubled production, an unhappy cast and crew, and the end of HHL as a production company. Is this film a flawed masterpiece, or a poorly assembled collection of talent that really missed the mark? Have a listen and hear what we have to say!

Special note! The version we watched of this film was on Amazon Prime (Canada) and was a horrible transfer, showing lots of decay and a horrible pan'n'scan job that really affected the aspect ratio. Sam and Derek were both pretty critical of the cinematography, and certainly the quality of the transfer we saw GREATLY impacted our viewing experience, and the visual appeal of the film.

ILOM - Episode 29 - His Girl Friday

ILOM - Episode 29 - His Girl Friday

Our month-long look at romance films comes to an end with Derek and Sam sitting down to check out His Girl Friday, a film considered to be the greatest 'screwball comedy'! Alternately light and dark, farcical and dramatic, this cleverly written, directed, and acted film takes dialogue delivery to a whole other level and even set the record for the most works spoken per minute in a feature film. Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell knock it out of the park in the Howard Hawks film, which is objectively a great movie....but is it a great *romance* movie? Have a listen to hear what we thought!

ILOM - Episode 27 - The Quiet Man

It took us 27 episodes, but we finally got around to covering a John Wayne film, to Sam's delight! However, we're not looking at one of his classic westerns, but this drama/comedy/romance from 1952! John Ford saw the Quiet Man as his best film, and Maureen O'Hara considered it her favourite as well. Wayne, for his part, put it in the top 3. Regardless, this classic tale of a fallen boxer on a road to redemption by way of true love and family roots is a good one, and these much to discuss!

And as an added bonus, enjoy our special guest cold open from Tanya Couch, who has a great story about visiting Cong, Ireland, that connects wonderfully to the film! Thanks to her for helping us out on this episode!

First up is this 1955 film, based on the autobiographical novel by Dr. Han Suyin. You never know what sort of film we are going to cast our gaze on when it comes to listener requests! This time around we take a look at a film that is a bit more recent that we normally would...1968's The Party, directed by Blake Edwards and starring Peter Sellers. We continue our all-request month of January with a look at a film noir from the "decline" period of sometimes-polarizing and controversial actor George Raft. Raft's career took off like a rocket in the 1930's, but his lack of acting ability, apathy towards many projects, poor career choices, and affiliations with criminals led to a long decline. ILOM - Episode 19 - Santa Claus Conquers the Martians

ILOM - Episode 19 - Santa Claus Conquers the Martians

Our look at films to celebrate the holiday season continues as we watch and discuss a movie widely considered to be one of the worst ever made, 1964's Santa Claus Conquers the Martians! Intended as a sci fi children's film to provide an alternative to Disney films, this off beat curiousity is a must-see for any lover of bad cinema. Firmly nestled into "so bad it's good" territory, Derek and Sam have a special affection for this one, and once you hear what they have to say, you might find yourself wondering if, indeed, "Voldar was right!"

ILOM - Episode 17 - To Hell And Back

ILOM - Episode 17 - To Hell And Back

To close off our all-war movie month of November, we take a close look at the man that was a greater action hero in real life than most actors are in their movies. The legendary Audie Murphy and his autobiographical performance in To Hell and Back tell a tale of heroism, bravado, loyalty, and courage the likes of which have to be seen to be believed! The heroism was real, but is it a good movie? Listen and find out what we thought.

Plus! As an added bonus for this episode, podcaster Phillip Kesterton of "Above and Beyond" joins us to tell us a bit about Audie Murphy, the man. Phillips show focuses on tales of battlefield heroism, so this seemed a natural time to collaborate with him.  We're big fans of his, and couldn't be happier with how it worked out. Please go give him a listen, and tell him the gang at ILOM sent you!
